When I first meet someone who is thinking of adoption, the first thing I tell them is “Cancel your subscription to the Lifetime Channel.” I only say this halfway in jest. We’ve all had that “friend” (or sister, or aunt or ex-college-roommate) who asks a dumb adoption question out of ignorance. This week’s strategies come from a real-live waiting mom, our friend Liz. My husband and I have been “a waiting family” for about five months now. In other words, we have been approved by our adoption agency, and therefore are doing the waiting game. So, I am a Lady in Waiting. Some people would say that [...] “The Wait” is defined differently for different people and for different adoption processes. In an international adoption, many Amoms consider themselves waiting once they get their referrals – i.e. they have seen photos (or videos) of their children and know they’ll be traveling to meet them soon(ish). In a domestic adoption, The Wait generally begins [...] There is nothing – nothing – that prepares you for The Wait. There aren’t any words to adequately describe the suspended animation of your life while you are waiting. You have to simultaneously be emotionally invested and guard your heart.
